Pro Sentret (the Pro Centre) is a Norwegian national resource centre on all matters related to prostitution and a health and social service centre for women and men in prostitution.
Founded in 1983 and financed by the Municipality of Oslo and the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, the Pro Centre is run by the Municipality of Oslo.
As a health and social service centre the Pro Centre's main aims are to provide help, support and advice to women and men in prostitution.
We employ a wide range of methodologies in this work.
The Pro Centre believes that Prostitution is an act, not a quality of a person. We want to increase understanding and promote solidarity with women and men in prostitution. We work against prejudice and stigmatisation. We believe that society must see women and men in prostitution as subjects in their own lives and show respect for their choices. We believe in the empowerment of the individual.
Individual social work The Pro Centre offers counselling, support and therapy for individuals, couples and groups. We try to provide sexworkers with the resources they need to enable them to take better care of themselves and experience alternatives to prostitution if they choose so.
Drop-in centre The Pro Centre has a drop-in centre with a harm reduction profile. The drop-in centre has a strong focus on health issues and motivational work. We encourage the users to participate in running the drop-in centre.
Outreach work We do outreach-work among women in street prostitution as well as among women working in indoor-prostitution. We have a special focus on migrant women and young women. Health education and counselling are important goals for this work.
Cultural mediators The Pro Centre uses cultural mediators when working with migrants who sell sex in Norway. These help communication and understanding by "translating" culture as well as language. Russian, Thai and Nigerian cultural mediators work at the Pro Centre.
Male prostitution At the moment, the Pro Centre does not have outreach work focusing on male prostitution, but we are a social service centre also for men.
Health care The Pro Centre runs a health care service with focus on sexual and reproductive health. The service is free of charge.
National resourse center In the capacity of a national resource centre, the Pro Centre provides counselling, information and research material nation-wide on
- female, male and child prostitution - backgrounds for and effects of prostitution - methods in social work aimed at helping people in prostitution
Furthermore, we take an interest in different aspects of prostitution such as
- legal issues - policies - ideologies and ethics - international developments
